The marathon's namesake, Paavo Nurmi, was the winner of nine Olympic Gold Medals, the greatest Finnish runner in that nation's history. The name reflects the predominantly Finnish heritage of the region. The USTAF-sanctioned Paavo Marathon begins at 7:30 am the second Saturday of August, on the main street in the small community of Upson and concludes on Silver Street in Hurley, having run its course through forests and fields, along rivers and lakes. Half marathon, 5 person, and 2 person team options.

In consideration of this entry being accepted, and desiring to be legally bound to myself, my heirs, assigns, executors and administrators, I hereby waive and release any of the sponsoring groups, officials or owners of facilities, any and all private homeowners, attendants, or any or all people and facilities connected with the Paavo Nurmi Marathon for any and all injuries suffered by me at said event, or on the way to and from event.  I further hereby certify that I am physically fit to run in the Paavo Nurmi Marathon on August 12, 2017.  Athletes who participate in this competition may be subject to formal drug testing in accordance with USATF rules and IA AF Rule 144.  Athletes found positive for banned substances, or who refuse to be tested, will be disqualified from this event and will lose eligibility for future competitions. The undersigned grants full permission to any and all foregoing use to his/her likeness, including photographs and videotape for publicity and advertising purposes without compensation. Participant understands that the course closes at 2:00 pm.  No aid stations or timing is provided after 2:00 pm.  Course is swept and any remaining participants are given a ride to the finish.
